Relevant sustainable practices in TEOCAO:

  1. Teocäo promotes the use of agroforestry systems among the ejidos Nueva Costa Rica, Mapastepec and through the cooperative Tajawil Ta Kakaw in El Hular, Tuzantán in Chiapas; where natural pollination, selection of champion plants and acriollamiento of species, as well as natural genetic resistance are promoted through the use of cocoa polycultures.
  2. Promotes tekio and family agriculture in 7 families of producers.
  3. Promotes the training of producers through awareness workshops on the preservation of Mexican cacao and the conservation of forests through Mayan «cacaotales» systems as a resilience mechanism in the face of climate change.
  4. Implementation of sustainable post-harvest cocoa practices (fermentation and drying) avoiding the waste of water required in traditional post-harvest practices.
  5. Promotes food security for families through the planting of different fruit trees and edible vegetables such as mango, banana, rambutan, mamey, mangosteen, yaca, cinnamon, Mayan nut, pacaya and acuyo.
  6. Plan for the rescue and preservation of native cacao trees in the region, through the location of genetic material and its reproduction in nurseries and cuttings for immediate grafting.
